Nevis Island Living - fabric artwork in the heart of Charlestown
Deborah Tyrell is a talented cloth artist, born in Trinidad and educated in Toronto who now calls Nevis home. Nevis Island Living is her creation and earlier this month we caught up with her to find out more about her gallery, artwork and life on the island.
"I have been sewing for a long time. I initially started doing craft work by appliquéing different island characters onto aprons and potholders.
"My artwork is meant to elevate traditional Women's Work. So many of us think of sewing as for clothing that to use cloth for art with the same sewing technique is a way to add value to the time we women spend doing things.
"I made Nevis home through marriage initially. However, when I look around Nevis, with the sunsets ever present, nature so close and the sky so blue. I don't feel I could live anywhere else for too long.
"If you're thinking come for the vacation, I'd encourage it, come and take time to be quiet, sit and watch the ocean and it will sing to you. Once that happens, you will know what to do next."
